Gales force winds, massive swells and crashing waves in the height of a thunderous storm all lie in wait for the pirate riders of Piraten, one of Europe's best rollercoasters set on the coast of Denmark at Djurs Sommerland.
Piraten is an immense experience, with a speedy cable lift hill giving way to huge hills, racing corners, banked turns, a tunnel and an incredible set of twisting bunny hops. It's a 100ft tall example of an Intamin Mega-Lite coaster model, which uses a similar track and train design to Intamin's Accelerator Coasters but without the launches or top hat elements.
It is an outstanding ride, with superb pacing and powerful G-forces - both intense positive Gs on the low level speed turns and negative Gs with the ejector airtime over the hills. Considering its relatively small size, there are a large number of elements which are packed together relentlessly. It is certainly not a rollercoaster for the faint hearted!
Piraten has a reputation as one of the best coasters in the world, and it is easy to see why. The thrills it offers are hard to match. The forces, airtime and layout combine into something very, very special and it is a real jewel in the crown for Djurs Sommerland.
