Set in the heart of Polar Land, Polar X-plorer is the largest rollercoaster at Legoland Billund and takes riders on a trip into a landscape filled with snow and ice.
The ride comes from Zierer and is one of their Elevated Seating Coaster models, and the first to feature a special vertical drop track.
The drop takes place after the train enters a snow cave, with Lego minifigs working inside with ice axes and other tools. Sadly the inside of the cave has almost no theming and looks very much like a dark grey coloured warehouse with the drop track clearly visible.
Riders witness a minifig climber hanging by a rope on a large projection screen above them, before the ice shelf they are resting on gives way and the whole train drops down five metres. Whilst it sounds intense, the drop is very slow and controlled making it appropriate for Legoland's family audience. It's still a lot of fun, but one of the weaker examples of a vertical drop element.
Mixed in with the race through the ice and rocks, and the vertical drop, Polar X-plorer's final section has the snow mobile themed train passing beside a real life penguin enclosure before it returns to the station.
Polar X-plorer is fun and well targeted for Legoland, with a good level of theming apart from inside the drop section. While the vertical drop is forceless it is still a nice gimmick, and means the coaster is not too scary for young kids.
