Hype and Boom
Sitting on the shore of Lake Näsijärvi, Särkänniemi is an amusement park in the Finnish city of Tampere.
The park features a well rounded set of amusement rides alongside a farm, aquarium and 120 metre tall observation tower.
After several fairground rides operated on the site over the summer for two seasons prior, Särkänniemi was officially opened in 1975. A number of the original rides were purchased from Linnanmäki, the amusement park in Helsinki.
Särkänniemi's ride collection has grown substantially since then, with highlights including Tornado, one of only two Intamin Suspended Looping Coasters; Hype, a Premier Rides Sky Rocket II rollercoaster; and Boom, a 68 metre tall shot and drop tower. Together with these come various thrill rides, a large children's area and assorted restaurants, games stalls and shops.
The park is bright, colourful and nicely kept, and its position on a peninsula sticking out into the lake provides a picturesque backdrop. It has a calm welcoming atmosphere typical of Finland, and indeed across Scandinavia, with staff being friendly and patrons being largely impeccably behaved.
