Think of the greatest academics, historians and teachers - who would be the best placed to give visitors to France's Futuroscope a comprehensive overview of the most important events in world history? I bet you didn't think of a group of crazy mischievous rabbit-headed aliens, did you?!
But the Raving Rabbids - stars of Ubisoft's hit video game franchise - are exactly who Futuroscope chose to present their Machine à Voyager dans le Temps (Time Machine) ride, which takes visitors on a hilarious fun-filled time travelling adventure.
The dark ride is one of the star attractions at the spectacular theme park. Visitors join in the fun by wearing 3D glasses and sitting on toilet seat themed trains which each hold 15 riders. Yes, toilet seats ... but that's only one of the brilliantly bizarre elements on Machine à Voyager dans le Temps!
The Rabbids have managed to convert a washing machine into a time machine, allowing them and the audience to travel between different eras and witness various major historical scenes. During the journey riders discover how many of the events we take for granted were as a result of the Rabbids interference, clumsiness or just general mischievousness!
Visitors are shuttled between each scene enthroned on their toilet seats, passing through the discovery of fire, Ancient Greece and the start of the Olympic Games, and Native American Indians. The pace picks up as the washing machine malfunctions and travels through scenes including the Apollo 11 moon landing, the Titanic, the Loch Ness Monster and the Leaning Tower of Pisa in quick succession. As the machine finally expodes, riders find themselves back and ready to disembark at the now-destroyed public toilets from which their adventure began.
Scenes are presented through a clever mix of 3D high definition video projection, physical sets, animatronics and onboard special effects including moving seats, vibrations, air jets and water sprays. Everything has been superbly integrated, building into a wonderfully immersive top quality experience.
The ride is popular and can attract long queues. That's not a problem thanks to the superb queueline theming, which takes visitors through an art gallery featuring the Rabbids hilariously invading famous paintings and a museum showcasing numerous artefacts they have messed about with.
La Machine à Voyager dans le Temps is one of the craziest, stupidest, most fun, amazing, totally bonkers dark rides in the world. The madcap humour, creative plot, magnificent animations and detailed theming combine to produce one of the best attractions at Futuroscope and one that will leave you reminiscing and laughing for days.
