Toutatis was part of Parc Astérix's 3 hectare Festival Toutatis expansion opened for the 2023 season and is the new area's headline attraction.
Named after a Celtic god who protected tribes in ancient Britain and Gaul, Toutatis is an LSM Launch Coaster from Intamin and cost the park a reported €28million to build.
So what did Parc Astérix get for their money? Toutatis is both a shuttle coaster and full circuit thanks to some clever switch track. It's an awesome design which has the train launching out of the station, through a zero G stall and over some twisting bunny hops before an LSM boost sends it up the side of Toutatis' 51 metre top hat. Without sufficient power to make it all the way over, the train falls backwards into the boost in reverse. Thanks to the switch track, riders find themselves going not back through the first section of track but up a vertical spike, then falling forwards this time for a third and final pass through the LSM boost.
The ride's second half begins with the train propelled fast enough to clear the top hat. As it starts to dive down the other side, the rest of the circuit is revealed to riders laid out below them, with twisting airtime hills, a Zero G stall and a heartline roll. This second zero G stall is magnificent, with plenty of hangtime but enough speed that it doesn't feel laborious. The speedy ground hugging turns give some good positive G forces, while the hills provide some fantastic pops of airtime.
Toutatis is a splendid rollercoaster, with something for launch coaster fans, shuttle coaster fans and full circuit coaster fans alike. It's a showcase of Intamin at the top of their game, with a well paced layout and the flexibility afforded by the switch track being used to its full potential without feeling gimmicky. For now, in its opening year at least, the ride is smooth and graceful: if it can avoid developing the infamous Intamin rattle in future years, it will be a coaster hard to beat.
