The spirit world comes to Walibi Rhône-Alpes in the form of New Orleans Voodoo, the theme of the theme park's outstanding Mystic rollercoaster.
Mystic opened for Walibi Rhône-Alpes' 40th anniversary celebrations in 2019, and is an Infinity Coaster model from Gerstlauer. These coasters are known for their flexibility and the wide variety of features found in installations across the world, and Mystic has been gifted with some of the best of them.
Parts of the track layout are reminiscient of a Gerstlauer Eurofighter, especially the start which features a vertical lift hill and includes various tight turns and compact hills plus both a zero G roll and dive loop. The larger Infinity trains seem to help though, with everything feeling more graceful and much smoother than the rough and tumble of a Eurofighter.
Mystic's best part comes as the train climbs up a twisting spike, with momentum running out just as riders are upside-down. There are a few moments of hangtime before gravity takes over and pulls the train back downwards and through the closing part of the ride, in reverse. Observant first-time riders may be expecting the spike, but the shocking reality of the added inversion will almost certainly come as a (welcome) surprise.
While the twist is amazing, the prior dive loop is the only real dud part of the ride, being greatly inferior to the one on Tripsdrill's Karacho and not quite standing up to the rest of the brilliant ride experience.
Mystic is the highlight of Walibi Rhône-Alpes, and takes full advantage of the abilities of Gerstlauer's Infinity Coaster design to put riders through a thoroughly bewitching voodoo experience. The coaster is full of variety, out-of-your-seat air time, whippy changes of direction and peaks with a moment of tantilising hangtime dangling upside down looking at the theme park below. Massively re-rideable, it is one of the best (or maybe even the best) of the Infinity Coasters out there.
