Alongside nearby Europa-Park, Phantasialand ranks among the top theme parks not only in Germany, but in the world. While the main entrance is less than spectacular - it looks more like a tired local train station than the entrance to a major tourist attraction - what lies beyond is awesome. The park features a great selection of rides, all set in remarkably detailed themed areas. The attention to detail is unmatched by most other theme parks across the world.
Rides are spread across six themed lands. Berlin, recreating the feel of the city in the 1920s, is the first which guests coming in through the main entrance will encounter. Wuze Town, a fantasy land, is home to several kiddie rides together with an indoor area housing the double Winjas spinning coasters. Mexico is bright and colourful, and hosts the park's new Chiapas flume ride and the older Colorado Adventure mine train. This used to be subtitled "The Michael Jackson Thrill Ride" after the music star visited the park to open the ride. China and Deep in Africa are smaller lands, with the latter's main attraction being Black Mamba, a highly rated B&M inverted coaster.
The park's newest land is Klugheim, an extension of the pre-existing Mystery area. Klugheim is dark and foreboding. It features Taron, an Intamin dual launch coaster that dominates the area and provides a brilliant ride, and Raik, currently the world's longest Vekoma family boomerang. Both coasters opened as major additions for the 2016 season. In the wider area are Mystery Castle, a totally enclosed drop tower, and River Quest, one of the finest river rapids experiences in the world.
Together with the rides, Phantasialand features several high quality shows spread throughout the park, including an ice show (Ice College, a High School Musical theme for 2017), a large acrobatic/stage illusion show (Musarteum - Wenn Geister träumen in 2017) and several dance performances.
There is also Fantissima, a premium-priced dinner show on offer, which takes place in the evening after the park has closed. It includes a four course meal interspersed with live entertainment over five hours. The show features a large cast of singers, dancers, acrobats and other acts from around the world. Don't make the mistake of turning up straight from the park - you will be welcomed of course, but will look slightly out of place in your jeans and tshirt amongst the diners dressed up in their posh dresses and smart shirts. It is, though, highly recommended.
