Dropping into the mine

Visitors to Efteling's late-nineteeth century mine workings are invited to become trainee miners and help extract the valuable gold which lies hidden underground.

Baron 1898's story revolves around the mine and its owner Baron Gustave Hooghmoed who, in 1898, discovers the gold deposits. They are guarded by ghostly spirits known as the Witte Wieven (white women) who tell the Baron that if he disturbs the gold in any way he will pay severe consequences.

Thus, instead of incurring the wrath of the Witte Wieven himself, the Baron hires local men and women to do the dirty work for him.

The rollercoaster itself is a Dive Coaster from Swiss manufacturer B&M. Riders board one of the eighteen-seater "mine carts" within a heavily themed station designed to look like the mine's offices and maintenance workshop. From here the cars are sent out into the mine, but not before riders see the Witte Wieven circling overhead.

Dangling over the edge of a 37½ metre precipice then dropping vertically into a steam-filled tunnel below, it quickly becomes apparent that the Witte Wieven are still out to protect the gold and will do anything in their power to sabotage the mining attempts.

Racing out the other side of the tunnel, the rollercoaster cars rise up into an Immelmann loop before turning upside down in a zero-G roll followed by a speedy helix. After an airtime inducing bunny hop, the train hits the final brakes and moves toward the unload station for riders to disembark.

Baron 1898 is an excellent ride, if rather on the short side. This, however, is more than made up for by the detailed theming and storyline that have been applied throughout. It is a real testament to the exceptional quality of Efteling's attractions and desire to exceed visitor's expectations.
