A rapids boat floats through Katanga Canyon
Katanga Canyon is Alton Towers' African themed area, centred around an African mining town.
It features Congo River Rapids, a whitewater rapids ride whose water channels weave through the area; and Runaway Mine Train, which runs out of control from the town's mine workings.
Having first opened in 1992, Katanga Canyon's lush plants and trees are well developed, lending the area an immersive feeling. Plenty of theming elements add to the feel, with African themed buildings and even a safari Land Rover about to slip down a hill into one of Katanga's lakes.
There is a very catchy soundtrack which plays throughout the Canyon too ... after hearing it for a few minutes it becomes instantly recognisable, and it is hard not to hum along.
At the heart of the African settlement is Explorers Pizza and Pasta Buffet, a sitdown restaurant offering unlimited pizza and pasta, and Katanga Cargo, a large shop offering a range of snacks, drinks, African themed souvenirs and stuffed animals.
