X-Sector entrance gateway
X-Sector is a Top Secret government testing facility housed in the grounds of Alton Towers.
The stark concrete surroundings and high barbed wire fences contain within them two of the theme parks major rollercoasters:
To the right of the forboding X-Sector entrance gates lies The Smiler, a twisted metal ball of track weaving between the legs of the Ministry of Joy's Marmaliser device. Further into the sector lies Oblivion, an intriguing Secret Weapon that hides some mysterious goings-on within. It seems from X-Sector there is No Way Out.
Perched within Oblivion's huge turnaround track is Enterprise, one of Alton Towers' oldest flat rides. Other facilities within X-Sector include the X-Cite arcade, food outlets and a toilet block at the top of the hill.
Prior to the arrival of The Smiler, a huge tent sat in X-Sector which housed the Black Hole rollercoaster.
Riders board rollercoaster cars inside a top secret military base, before dropping vertically 100ft down a hole in the ground and into oblivion
Proof that world record breaking rollercoasters aren't always the best, The Smiler lacks finesse and pacing through its 14 painful inversions
