Sir Algenon and pilot Felicity must recharge five mystical crystals to restore The Power of the Towers, in Alton Towers' 2019 fireworks spectacular...
For the last few years it has felt that Alton Towers' Fireworks event hasn't been as "big" as it once was, the impression not helped by the reduction from holding it over three nights to two nights in 2016. However, in 2019 the additional Friday night was restored and the whole show felt like it was back to its full spectacular form.
The theme of the show was "The Power of the Towers", and opened with a voiceover introducing the story: Hidden inside Alton Towers is an ancient structure that holds five mystical crystals which, when connected, generate a force which has charmed the grounds for centuries. The force is known as The Power of the Towers. If the connection was ever broken then the magical force would fail and Alton Towers would fall.
Sir Algeon and his assistant Captain Felicity appeared high up on the main centrepiece erected on The Lawns, and we found that they were in search of the crystals, but as they discovered them they disturbed the connection and the crystals' power drained away. And so, the main part of the show was set: To save The Power of the Towers they must recharge each crystal's individual essence.
Over five acts, each of the crystals was restored. Each one represented a different aspect of The Power of the Towers: Adventure, Fear, Magic, Thrill and finally the Heart Stone which was the most significant of the crystals. Just in time, Sir Algenon and Felecity managed to restore The Power of the Towers.
Sir Algenon: "The next thing you're going to do is drag me through a dungeon."
Felicity: "Good idea!"
The centrepiece set was huge, and was used both as a platform for actors portraying Sir Algenon and Felicity, and to display the five giant crystals. There were some good musical selections which, together with a few great lines in the script created a really feel-good show. Fireworks were in abundance, and the aerial shells were huge which provided a spectacle throughout which in previous years would have been saved for use only in the climax of the show.
Alton Towers Fireworks event felt very much back at the top of its game: The Power of the Towers really had been restored.
