Sitting on the old Submission site in X-Sector, Mixtape was one of the temporary Retro Squad rides for the 2021 season.
The ride was a Smashing Jump from Sartori. Riders sat on chairs suspended on arms connected into the centre of the ride. This would spin around, with the arms "jumping" up and down as they went.
As you might expect from the name, Mixtape had a soundtrack full of Eighties classics - although, in fact the same music playlist could be heard on all of the Retro Squad rides.
The story behind the Retro Squad rides revolved around a cry for help to bring thrills to Alton Towers being sent out into space in the 1980s. The Retro Squad responded but got lost in time, eventually arriving at the park in time for the 2021 season with their distinctively Eighties look and feel.
In reality, the park was concerned about the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions which were affecting capacity at some of their most popular permanent rides, so the Retro Squad fairground rides were hired in as an attempt to provide more to do and ease pressure on existing attractions.
