Carnival of the Bizarre made a few visits to Thorpe Park Fright Nights between 2004 and 2008, with live stage shows performed in the Pirates 4D cinema building on all but Fright Nights 2006 when the acts performed throughout the park.
The shows were presented by Circus of Horrors, a group of professional circus performers formed by John Haze and Gerry Cottle that tour the UK putting on steam punk style performances combining circus acts with comedy and mock horror.
In Carnival of the Bizarre, fifteen minute segments of the Circus of Horrors’ usual acts were performed, with ring master Docktor Haze at the helm. The Burlesque Victorian themed routines were some of the best of the live acts that have featured at Fright Nights over the years – probably because these were professional circus performers.
The main act would be varied between performances, meaning visitors could see more than one show during the night without seeing the same thing. One particular highlight was Gary Stretch, a man who holds the Guinness World Record for the stretchiest skin. Harking back to the freak shows of old, Carnival of the Bizarre was definitely not for the squeamish!
