Black Mirror Labyrinth is an experience at Thorpe Park based on the hit British TV series which showcases a distopian near-future.
Thorpe Park's attraction is set around the story of Labyrinth, an AI system that has learned about humans by studying their wealth of social media posts, but has now gone rogue and is out to "delete" humanity.
Visitors find themselves trapped in the heart of the labyrinth, with only the help of a mysterious hacker who opens a door into a twisted mirror maze which they must navigate in order to escape.
The experience has been designed to be disorienting rather than scary, and features a lot of special effects and lighting designed to enhance the story. Unfortunately it is too much style over substance, and Black Mirror Labyrinth is essentially a dressed up mirror maze - and a very short one at that.
The various preshows are cleverly done (including using photos of visitors as part of the social media storyline), but most of the plot points are likely to pass over the heads of most people unless they pay complete attention.
The attraction was originally supposed to open in 2020, but was delayed a year due to the Covid pandemic and finally premiered in 2021.
Black Mirror Labyrinth is a minor attraction at Thorpe Park, which as often happens was overly hyped by their marketing team. As a small mirror maze with some nice effects it works for five minutes out of a guest's day, but as a full-blown major all-singing all-dancing experience it falls way short of the mark.
