Idlewild's enchanting Story Book Forest allows children to wander through a land filled with characters from well-known fairytales and nursery rhymes, visiting houses and cottages depicting scenes from the stories.

The area was originally opened in 1956 as a separate attraction, before being incorporated into the rest of Idlewild after the park was purchased by the Kennywood Park Corporation in 1983.

Visitors enter the Story Book Forest through the open pages of a giant storybook which reads: "Here is the land of once upon a time. Step through the pages of this big story book and visit the people and places every child knows and loves. Here dreams are real ... and so are your story book friends."

Inside, amongst the cottages housing fairytale scenes, are a large castle and a swashbuckling pirate ship, together with several actors who help bring the stories to life. Stories represented include Mother Goose, Little Miss Muffet, Billy Goats Gruff, Goldilocks, Jack and the Beanstalk, the Three Little Pigs, and Red Riding Hood.

Although not as extensive as some other Fairy Tale Forests, Idlewild's version is nicely done and full of entertaining scenes which will keep children occupied for ages.
