Riding the bobsleds
Avalanche is Kings Dominion's bobsled coaster, which opened at the park in March 1988.
The rollercoaster was manufactured by Mack Rides and is the only Mack Bobsled Coaster to have ever been built in the United States.
It features a long curving track designed to look and feel like a bobsled run. For most of the time, the ride's train runs freely down inside the semi-circular shaped track rather than running on fixed rails. This freedom adds to the feeling of excitement, especially toward the end of the ride when the cars pick up quite a bit of speed.
The trains are composed of seven cars. Two riders sit in each car one in front of the other, with one rider effectively sitting in the other's lap. Each car is painted in the colours of a country that typically competes in the Winter Olympics.
Bobsled coasters are rare, but provide a lot of fun and family friendly thrills. Avalanche at Kings Dominion is no exception!
