Twisted Timbers
One of the hottest rollercoaster manufacturers of recent years has been Rocky Mountain Construction (RMC), largely because of their novel reimaginings of old wooden rollercoasters past their prime.
Twisted Timbers at Kings Dominion is one such conversion, being the reincarnation of The Hurler, the park's 1994 wooden out-and-back coaster from International Coasters, Inc.
RMC coasters are famed for their smoothness, insane inversions and incredible intensity - sometimes in fact they are a bit too intense. Luckily Twisted Timbers is an example of RMC at their greatest: it is intense for sure, but comfortably so and a definite candidate for multiple re-rides.
The ride's theme is set within an old apple orchard of the 1950s. The legend goes that one day in mere seconds something destroyed the whole harvest, tossing over tractors and ripping the wall right off the apple warehouse as it went. Many years later, the public have been invited inside to tour Hanover Hill Orchard and investigate exactly what went on.
The hybrid wood and steel construction is used to full advantage, starting with a barrel roll ahead of the 109ft first drop, and never relenting over the rest of the layout which features two other inversions, overbanked turns, airtime hills and a top speed of 54mph. Kings Dominion claim there are twenty pops of airtime, and there's not much to argue with - you'll feel yourself flying out of your seat almost constantly!
With its smoothness, creativity, dynamism and clever theming, Twisted Timbers is a brilliant rollercoaster and perhaps one of the finest RMCs to date. It is a must-do ride at Kings Dominion, and a real winner for the park.
